I consider accessories to be the icing on the cake for your outfits. After fit they are the most important part of your wardrobe. A beautiful accessory can pull an outfit together, add color, interest, personality and uniqueness. Accessories don’t need to be expensive to look great. In fact, the most-seen accessories this winter are probably already in your closet. Belts, large sunglasses, vests, and 70’s style capes are the ones to pull out.

Belts for Winter

Belts this season can go from narrow to very wide, and may be worn with a variety of different pieces.  Wide belts look great over a long dress or skirt, they will emphasize your waist, and add definition to an outfit. Wear a jeweled belt over a jumpsuit. Wide belts also work over a coat, especially if they can be wrapped around with a piece hanging down, creating a vertical line. Try a narrow belt over a shirt, or jacket, and you will like how it adds shape. Additionally, belts can be worn as intended, of course, through your belt loops, while creating contrast, or when matched with the color of your slacks, adding length to your torso.

Oversize Sunglasses

We have been seeing Jackie O type sunglasses for a while now, and the frames this season are even more exaggerated. These sunglasses are in various square or rectangular shapes, and the frames themselves are thick, so look even more dramatic. To emphasize the drama, try a dark color like black or tortoise. Anyone can wear dramatic glasses or sunglasses. Just make sure the size of the glasses fits your face, and that they don’t extend past your temple or cheekbones.

Vests and Capes

Vests provide the comfort appeal and retro look that we are all craving. Vests are versatile in that they can not only be worn over a dress, blouse, sweater or tee-shirt, but also on their own for a chic, men’s-inspired look. Vests work well for an active lifestyle, and when the weather is changeable. Choose a vest that is a different fabric from what you are wearing underneath. Wool goes well with silk, leather with knits, etc. The color of your vest can certainly contrast your top, but make sure the necklines are similar.

Capes have been around since the 70’s, and seem to come and go in popularity. This season they are back in the mix, and for good reason. Capes work well in all weather, and provide a cozy  layering piece. They come in a variety of fabrics, colors and textures. And, like the other accessories mentioned here, can be worn over everything from leggings to a long dress or skirt.
